My boyfriend and I are both into using essential oils in our everyday life. We have so many of them and love combining them in our oil diffuser to create different scents. I love the way my apartment smells after using them, so when I found out you can make perfume with essential oils, I knew I just had to try it. It’s cheaper than perfume you buy in the stores, it’s fun to make and doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.
Ingredients
I used lavender, geranium, bergamot and cedarwood in my perfume, but you can use any essential oil you wish. It is recommended to use one or more oils from each of the following categories:
Base notes (last the longest): cedarwood, sandalwood, ginger, clove, ginger, vanilla, cinnamon, frankincense.
Middle notes (the main smell): rosemary, pine, chamomile, geranium, lavender, cardamom, rose, ylang ylang.
Top notes (what you smell first): bergamot, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, tea tree, sage, lime.
On top of that, you’ll need a carrier oil. This is a vegetable oil (for example grapeseed oil) that doesn’t have much smell of its own and keeps all the other smells together. I also recommend to only use three or four smells besides your carrier oil, especially if you want to be able to smell the individual essential oils you used.
Make your perfume
I bought six small glass roller bottles from Amazon. It’s best to choose a roller bottle instead of a spray bottle because the oil is a bit thick and can clog the spray. My bottles came with a pipette (which I used for the grapeseed oil) and a funnel (used for the essential oils) to get your different oils easily inside the bottle.
I filled up my bottle for 90% with grapeseed oil, then added 5 drops of cedarwood, 10-15 drops of geranium, 15-20 drops of lavender and 5-10 drops of bergamot.
Once all the oils are inside the bottle, put the roller and the bottle cap on top of the bottle and shake it around for a bit. I could clearly see a color difference, the grapeseed oil was darker than the essential oils. So I shook it until I couldn’t notice the color difference anymore.
How do I like it?
I absolutely love how this turned out. The smell is so calming and soft, and applying it to my skin actually feels pretty good. I’ve been using it every evening so far, and falling asleep with the smell of lavender and geranium flowers is just wonderful. A few times I also used it as a perfume to go to work, and as a deodorant after working out. It’s especially nice as a natural deodorant since store-bought deodorants often have a lot of chemicals in them.
This post contains affiliate links, but everything I wrote in this post is my own and honest opinion.
Have you tried making perfume from essential oil? What is your favorite recipe?

Nice 🙂 Thanks fo sharing
I had no idea you could make your own perfume using essential oils but I am going to try it! I have only ever used them either on my skin or to make horse fly spray! HA!
Haha! The nice thing about the roller is that you can directly apply it to your skin. Many essential oils (especially the grapeseed oil which is used as the carrier in almost every essential oil based perfume) are really good for your skin. So it’s a perfume and skin care product in one 🙂
I love that this can be used as a deodorant as well as a perfume. Great job!
This is so interesting! I’ve been wanting try try essential oils lately! Ps, your blog design is lovely!
Thank you! And you’ll love the oils as soon as you try them. They have so many different usages and smell AMAZING! My boyfriend uses them in skin lotion and homemade toothpaste as well, which is really awesome.
That scent sounds so beautiful and peaceful . I will have to try this mixture myself .
What a brilliant idea. I would have never thought to make my own perfume!
This is such a lovely idea and the scent you mixed sounds like it would be wonderful! I’ve thought about doing this before but the price of essential oils and not knowing how it will turn out puts me off a bit!
The price is actually ok, depending on which oils you’re looking for. Some of them only cost $6 or so (the grapeseed oil was 3 dollars), but others (like rose) may cost $15+. The good thing is, they last an extremely long time. You only need a few drops to create a powerful smell 🙂
We’ve been using ours on an almost daily basis for months in our oil diffuser, and most of them aren’t even half empty yet.
Are these oils 100% pure. Make homemade is a plus and one I enjoy.
Yes, 100% pure and natural. Now Foods and Cococare are the best when it comes to natural products. I once bought rose essential oil from a random brand at a home decor store, and it turned out to be not natural and unsafe to apply on the skin.
I’ve been wanting to try making my own perfume for a while. I usually stay away from roller bottles because with the sprays, I can at least put them on my clothes instead of the chemicals going directly on my skin 😉 But since these are safe that’s a really good tip so that they go on smoothly! Does the scent last all day?
I love that these are safe to use directly on my skin! The grapeseed oil is even good for our skin 🙂
The scent lasts all day, but it becomes less noticeable towards the end of the day. But it gets me through 8 hours of work, which is the most important part. It’s also easy to carry with me, so I carry it with me when I know I might sweat and use it as a deodorant 🙂
I have never tried this. I always just buy perfume. But I love this idea. You can make it personal and add anything you like. It’s also interesting you made a deodorant. Love it.
This is such a good idea and means you can create a scent that is truly your own, without the costly price tag!
Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful idea, will definitely try this out.
Honestly it didn’t even have an idea if you could actually do something of this sort. Making your own perfume using essential oils sounds awesome. I will definitely try it out.
Let me know if you liked it 🙂
That is so clever that you can make this yourself, I bet it works in a similar way to the sleep sprays you can buy x
I’ve heard others talk about base notes, top notes and middle notes, and not really been a perfume wearer myself, I’ve never understood what they were talking about….and never asked (kinda felt a bit stupid lol). After reading your post, I’m a lot more educated and actually considering making my own. Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Aww what a great way to use essential oil. Thanks for the idea!
This sounds fab. Would love to make my own perfume one day.
I totally love DIY! I will try it out for sure. Thanks!
I don’t use essential oils on daily basis but I love the idea of making the perfume!
Oh this actually looks perfect! I’ve never though of creating my own parfume but this makes it look easy and fun 🙂
This sounds so interesting, I’d love to make my own scent! xo
This is such a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Ok no way! Just lie that you can make your own perfume! This remind me of the movie Perfume, story of a murderer, LOVE it, you need to watch it.

Wow! I never thought of such an amazing way to make perfume! Thanks!
What a lovely idea and I like that you can make it exactly how you want too. How long does the scent stay on ?
I use it in the morning and I can still notice it at night, but it does get less intense over time. I guess it’s best to reapply in the evening if you want to smell it clearly until bedtime. But you don’t need that much of it, so that’s fine 🙂
This is a great idea for travel rather than bringing a big bottle on holiday.
I love the idea of making my own perfume and this sounds amazing!!
Fantastic thank you for sharing this post I love just essential oils and now with these tips I will be able to use it as a refund too
Perfumes with the essential oil are my favourite ones! ♥ They hold on clothing and body for so long ʕ•͡ᴥ•ʔ
