Must-haves for a year full of self-love

With celebrities and role models dying on a way too regular basis, Brexit happening and Trump getting elected, this year has been trying hard to drag us down. Luckily, in a few days from now, we all can get a fresh start and hope for a more positive 2017. I’d like to suggest we all focus on something more important than weight loss or life goals this time around: self-love and positivity. Let’s try to make this the year where we accept and love ourselves for who we are.

In 2017, after a year filled with depressing events, self-love will be crucial. We will have to love, support and take care of each other. And, to say it in RuPaul’s words, if you can’t love yourself how the hell you’re gonna love somebody else? So let’s make this year a good one, for ourselves and for those around us.

Free Self-love Worksheet

If you suffer from insecurities, self-doubt or a mental illness such as anxiety, balancing out the ‘negative voices‘ is a must. It’s easy to critique yourself, to hate your body or to overthink an embarrassing situation. But positive moments or qualities are often forgotten. One of the things I recently started doing to notice and remember all the positivity and beauty around me, is filling in a self-love worksheet. You can download it for free as well by subscribing to my mailing list at the bottom of the post.

The sheet has 4 questions and space for a positive note to my future self each day to fill in. The vary a bit each day, but all come down to the same thing. I list positive qualities about myself, things I’m grateful for, happy memories and things I’m proud of. All in all, filling in the list only takes 5 minutes or less, and it’s helping me see all the positive things about myself I would otherwise ignore.

A Support System

This might be the most important item from the list. Be it a close friend, your partner, a trusted family member or a therapist, talking to someone about your feelings is a must. But also don’t be afraid to cut out toxic or abusive people. There’s no room for them in your life. Surround yourself with positive, supportive and loving people, and loving yourself will suddenly become a lot easier.

A Self-love Journal

Journaling can do wonders for your mental health, and I selected a few of my favorite journals and workbooks that focus specifically on self-love and positivity.

Gratitude JournalMy favorite one is the 100-day happiness planner (Etsy), a journal that is meant to be filled in every evening, and focuses on gratitude, goals and positivity.Gratitude JournalBe Yourself and Nothing Else (Etsy) has quotes, challenges and coloring pages in addition to being a great daily gratitude journal.

Meditation tools

Meditation is a powerful tool when it comes to reducing anxiety and raising your overall happiness levels. One of the only things that works best for me is guided meditation. But it’s worth noting that meditation doesn’t work for everyone, and that different people may require different forms of meditation. If you want to start meditating, or give it another try, I definitely recommend these things:

  • ZenFriend meditation timer (iOS | Android)
  • Headspace guided meditation (iOS | Android)
  • Meditation Kit (Etsy)
  • Guided meditation for positivity (YouTube)
  • Meditation music for self-love (YouTube)
  • Benefits of meditation & how to do it (YouTube)
